I just finished watching the inauguration.  I cried.  We’ve taken the first steps to leach away the poison of slavery.  I reveled in listening to a man who can form a coherent sentence.  As a writer I listened to the play of words written by a man who loves language.
I looked at the crowds stretching away from the Capitol.  A crowd that held black, white, brown and Asian faces.  Where women stood side by side with men.  Many of them were standing on the site where slaves had been auctioned.
I reflected on the fact that Michelle Obama’s ancestors were some of the slaves who built the Capitol.
A new era begins.  Let’s see what we can do to help.

A day or so ago, when my girlfriend and I were getting ready to watch a DVD, we hit on a news broadcast of Obama's State Department press conference. And as I watched it, I thought

* That's a black man standing up there saying "My administration." Wow.
* It's such a pleasure to hear a speech by a political figure who's in actual command of the English language. I won't spend the next four years being ashamed for my country every time the president makes a speech.
* He's actually stating basic principles and drawing conclusions from them. And though I may not agree with all of his conclusions, his starting points are actually the right ones.

I expect to disagree with a lot of Obama's actions. But my god, having him in office is a big improvement.
