Folk Art Festival
It was a day of intense physical activity — digging holes in extremely rocky soil so we can plant some trees. It’s not where I want to plant trees, but we have some obnoxious neighbors in the valley below us who are annoyed because we built our house. The guy at the country told us to plant these trees and them he can tell these folks to take a hike, and not bother him or us again. After a long soak in hot water to ease the aching muscles we headed off to the International Folk Art Festival on Museum Hill. We had to park a long way away, but it was a beautiful day and I love to walk. The boths were oddly wighted to people from the various “stans”. The work was beautiful, and there was some metal work from Haiti that was really amazing. Very Lovecraftian.
I enjoyed the music most of all. There was an amazing group from Africa performing during the time we were wandering. Just drums and a bell and rich human voices that sounded like velvet rolling out across the plaza. Each of the drums was tuned to a different key, and the whole experience seemed to echo in my chest like a second heartbeat. I stood mesmerized for almost twenty minutes.
We finished our afternoon of goofing off with dinner at Cafe Paris in Burro Alley. We set outside and ended up in a long conversation with a very pleasant couple from Florida. Tomorrow I’m calling Hubbard to arrange for Pi’s transport out to California. I’m trying not to think about it too much. I know I’m making the right decision, but it’s hard. Next month I will begin in earnest to find a new horse.

You know, I wasn’t kidding when I offered to dig holes.

I know that, and I really, really appreciate it, but I don’t want to abuse a friendship, and this way I can call upon you when I really need the help. I actually enjoy physical work. I’m in my head so much that it’s theraputic to just work the body and let the mind float.

My husband, Sam, and I were the couple from Florida that you talked to at Cafe Paris. We had such a lovely time in Santa Fe … one of the most glorious cities in the U.S. Also enjoyed looking at your website … Pi is gorgeous! I had to laugh that you “hate lawyers” as that is what Sam does, however, he heartily agrees with you! I have been telling him to feed me information about his cases and I’ll write a novel. (haha … I have NO experience at writing, but have always imagined that I have a novel in me somewhere …). In any event, it was wonderful to meet you and your husband and, perhaps at some future time, we will meet again! You are always welcome to visit us in Florida and find out why we love escaping the heat and humidity in the summer! Would enjoy taking you out and about on our boat “Sea’Ammo Pazzo”, which literally means “we are crazy” in Italian (but we like to say “we are crazy about the sea”) …

Hi, Jana,
I’m waving exuberantly at you. Glad you got home safely.
At least I come by my hatred of lawyers fairly — I used to be one. I even practiced law for a few years. But I’m glad Sam won’t reject me since I’m no longer “of the body”. I can’t help being curious. What kind of law does Sam practice?
I may just take you up on that boating expedition. I love the ocean, but I love NM more so I’ve never been able to actually move closer to the water.
