But I think that's why so many of us like to think of the Democratic party as the "reality-based party." So many Republicans behave one way in public and another way in private, kind of like the way so many Saudis restrict alcohol and Western influence in their country while drinking and having Western satellite TV at home.

Jet-packs, yeah, jet-packs. Way better than rocket boots for anyone who has played Paranoia. :)

Laurie, you're absolutely right. The Republicans act like the world could be just like a 1950's sitcom if only the uppity women would get back in the kitchen, minorities would shut up or if they must speak, speak English, husbands and wives would have twin beds because sex is _evil_ unless it's for procreation, and the only worry kids have is whether to have a chocolate or a strawberry milk shake.

Out here in San Diego, my district had a Republican candidate who was a Log Cabin Republican, pro-choice, and supportive of gay rights. I voted for him. But I didn't find this out from his campaign literature, but rather from a mailer that came to my address from a woman who was running as a write-in candidate; she wanted to make sure I knew that she was a real support of Family Values and this guy was not. I was tempted to write her a note of thanks for helping me decide who to vote for—and actually getting me to vote for a Republican.

(Personally, I thought the most convincing image of Family Values I'd ever seen was those long lines of same-sex couples lined up in San Francisco waiting for marriage licenses. But that's another story.)
