Two good friends of ours lost their house in Rancho Bernardo, and several others have been evacuated. But the latest news sounds as if things are improving a little. In the meantime, we've been keeping in touch both with our local friends and with people we know elsewhere, partly by phone but largely by e-mail and livejournal, much more than we did during the last big fires in 2003, and it makes a difference. There's a lot less sense of isolation. It may be that the worst is over now; let us hope that this is so.
