Great story about your New York trip!

Ahh, Paul Cornell. Nice guy (and I really wasn't stalking him at LACon...we just kept winding up in the same places at the same time!). He keeps writing the second best Dr. Who material, and keeps loosing short dramatic presentation Hugos to Steven Moffat. And will again next year, too. *sigh*

Well, Paul thinks he's going to win this one, and he might have a point. It depends on if the viewers/voters go with something that is emotionally heart wrenching as FAMILY OF BLOOD or if they go with a perfect clockwork piece like BLINK.

I confess I'm deeply conflicted about which episode I liked better. I just hope they don't canel each other out.

No, that's my job!

I really enjoy everything Paul and Steven have written for Dr. Who. And I voted for Father's Day (Paul's script) for the Hugo, though on later rewatching, I thought the Empty Child/Doctor Dances two-parter was stronger.

I've never heard the kind of pre-buzz for a TV episode that I heard for Blink. When I was at Armadillocon, there was a huge amount of chatter about it (while it hadn't been on in the States yet, a surprising number of people had already seen it). There were also people talking about "The Angels Have the Police Box," "Sally Sparrow for Companion" and "Saxon" (of course, that was after Blink).

The Human Nature/Family of Blood episodes were excellent and they were wrenching for the Doctor and Martha. But Blink was such a stunning twist on the nature of time travel that I completely adored it. And the whole stuff about how Larry shares the mystery of the Doctor's video with the Internet; simply hysterical and spot on.

Lugar's! I'm incredibly jealous. My favorite steak place, too. Please tell me you ordered the porterhouse (preferably steak-for-three for two) and didn't settle for the fish. If you did, the waiter probably gave you the hairy eyeball. Did you have onion rolls and Lugar sauce as well? The giant shrimp salads? Onion and tomato? Did you have to wait an hour for your reservation? (Usually that doesn't happen if you're on the early shift.)

The setting is horrible, the service pretty bad, but I'm with George. Great beef.

Okay, I guess I'm in the decided minority, but I wasn't that impressed. I had a small steak because I wanted mine rare and everybody else was going for medium rare or medium. There was a big line of gristle running through the center of the meat, so I wasn't terribly pleased. Truthfully when I want moo I usually go for rare prime rib. In fact I think I'm going to cook a big standing rib roast for Christmas. I'm tired of turkey.

As for the rest of the meal -- I liked the tomatoes and onions, the rolls and the sauce, but I liked the creamed spinach the best. We ended up with the really early seating because they only had a couple of months notice to get the reservation. Because of the early time Tom's wife didn't join us, and I was very disappointed by that. I really wanted to meet her, and I knew she and Ian would have a lot to talk about.

(Also, I am reviewing "Inside Straight" for my local paper. Already read it and ... dang! It is good! Melinda, I can't believe you killed ... [you know] !!!)

It's an interesting character I've created for this triad, but yes? Not my usual "good guy". Wait until you read the interstitial in BUSTED FLUSH which we just sent off to NY today. The interstitial features my character. (I'm being very cautious, foiks, because there are some secrets we don't want to give away.) :)

I've been talking about the book in a couple places on the net now, and I am trying to be as spoiler-free as possible at all times. I won't go into detail now either, except to say that I really loved the placement of your three sections in Inside Straight. It was very artfully and cannily done; some credit probably goes to GRRM for that as well. Just the way they wove in and out between other stories in the book was a really neat effect.

Also, beautiful writing on the action sequence in the second one! (the fake bank robbery bit) I was on an airplane when I read that section, and I read it three times in a row just to admire how smoothly the action flowed.

Thanks, Jason, I really appreciate the compliment about the action sequence. I really think my work in Hollywood helped me choreograph action. Ted Elliot gave me a good piece of advice years ago. He said to take a hard look at how Jackie Chan used ordinary objects in a room to create the action. I've used that trick ever since, and it seems to work well. In fact I became known in Hollywood as "that chick who writes action".

George and I work very closely on editing these books, and the placement of stories for the maximum impact is part of that process.

We've just sent off BUSTED FLUSH to our editor, Patrick Nielsen-Hayden at Tor. Now I have a few months to think about something other than Wild Cards before we have to get into SUICIDE KINGS.

At least you ordered your steak cooked properly! I've never had an individual steak at Lugar's - was it the porterhouse? One doesn't go to Lugar's for the variety.

Great idea for the standing rib roast. That's been our traditional Christmas Eve feast, with roast potatoes and creamed spinach. I have been known to pass out after the meal.

Awesome Ted Elliot anecdote! I've been a fan of Terry Rossio's WordPlay columns for years. In fact -- wow, I just realized this -- I first found the WordPlay site because I googled the name of whoever Wild Cards Vol. 15 is dedicated to (Michael Engelberg?), and one of the top hits was one of Rossio's columns.

I've just recently decided, in fact, to start working on my own screenplay. Any other good tips ... ? :)

Here's tip Number One. Buy Final Draft. It's an awesome screenwriting program, and everybody is using it. I email all my screenplays to the manager, executives, producers, etc. You can buy it online at The Writer's Store.

Tip Number Two -- read a bunch of screenplays of movies or TV shows that you have liked.

Tip Number Three -- read your screenplay aloud as you write it, and then get some of your friends to gather and read the dialogue while you listen. There will be lines that will make you shudder.

Actually, I think it's time for me to write another blog about the process of screenwriting when you are working in a team as opposed to solo. Ian and I completed our spec TV pilot a few weeks before the strike began, and it was a fascinating process.
