Check it Out

My friend, Ian Tregillis has launched his incredible website, and I’d like to encourage folks to check it out. Ian is a really cool and interesting person, and he’s also a wonderful writer. He has a three book deal at Tor, and this is the most original and unique take on WWII you have ever read. He can be found at www.iantregillis.com

    Thanks for the plug, Melinda!

The URL in your post is actually my web designer’s development server,
where Richard tinkers on things. It’s only accessible through his home
    internet connection.

The URL for the fully-launched site on the main server is

    www.iantregillis.com

    :-)

Sorry, for my mistake. If anybody went to the wrong link, please take the opportunity to go back. The designer has done some very interesting things with the site.

Already one of my favorite sites. After yours, of course.

Ian’s does have more toys, though.

  4. Melinda Says:

Yes, it’s a beautiful site and he has cool toys. My problem is that I’m on a satellite dish for my internet and it’s not the fastest thing going. It is also effected by high wind, snow, heavy rain, etc. I’m trying to to complain because when I first moved in I had dial up.

The net result is that I’m very aware of internet speed, and I don’t want to have to wait forever for my own site to load. I think Patrick mentioned that about 60% to 70% percent of internet users have broadband, but that still leaves a significant number of people with just dial up.

I am going to redesign my home page because I like Ian’s so much. This is like a wild and wonderful new art form, and since I’m not very good at the visual arts I find it daunting.

Isn’t Ian Tregillis a character in the Poldark novels? At least, I think the Tregillises are wealthy land owners. I enjoyed visiting the website and look forward to dinner at Hop Li this weekend.

I’m one to talk. My site’s got no graphics or toys. Yikes. Been putting off updating it till the last book is finished, which means I’m going to have to start focusing on it soon.

Hi, this is Ian’s designer. I just wanted to let your readers know that I’ve fixed the techie stuff so that iantregillis.com goes to the same place as www.iantregillis.com.

I’m very pleased that you like my design. I knew going into Ian’s site design that it was going to be a lush visual and interactive experience, and thus of hefty KB. I apologize to you and the other 30%-40% who have to wait longer for it (about 200KB for the home page, I think). I tried to take advantage of every trick I could find to increase loading speed and make sure the text showed up before the graphics so at least you could read the latest blog entry while waiting for the graphics and Flash to load. After the home page is loaded subsequent pages go pretty quickly since the graphics are cached and reused throughout the site.

I think it’s worth the wait, but then I’m obviously biased.

You’ve done an awesome job, Richard. My friend Vic has a lot of trouble with websites that have Flash, and he didn’t even _realize_ that there was flash on Ian’s site. He’ll be seriously impressed.

Like I said, this is a new art form, and people like you, and my own designer, Corie Conwell are incredibly talented artists. All that I can do is wave may hands, grin and say, wow, wow, wow.

And try to at least post once in awhile, pass around the metaphorical salsa, and try to keep the joint hopping.

My only complaint about the site is the lack of nude/semi-nude Ian pics.

    Ian, I want more skin.
